History

The Korean Academy was founded in the spring of 2000 as a response to the growing Korean community in Bloomington-Normal, IL.  Koreans in the community are either first-generation immigrants or the descendants of immigrants who either want learn about their Korean heritage or to maintain it by enrolling their children in classes.  Classes first began being taught at the First Presbyterian Church in Normal, IL, but had moved to Shaw Hall on the Campus of Illinois Wesleyan University in the spring of 2003.. Semesters are designed to coincide with local high school and university schedules.  The academy enrolls dozens of students each semester, developing a student body of all heritages interested in the fascinating study of Korean language and culture.
